Duration of studies: normally two years Extent of studies: 120 CPs
Graduates of the Master of Arts in Music Pedagogy (MA MP) Music Theory teach music theory privately, at music schools, or at conservatories, universities and other institutions of higher education. In answer to the continually rising standards which instrumentalists and singers must meet, not only instrumental/vocal, but also on an intellectual, reflective plane, this program offers the opportunity to educate teachers capable not only of communicating this aspect of musical education to amateurs, but also of preparing professional students adequately for their future profession.
Aims of studies
The MA MP Music Theory Program is strongly oriented toward music theory teaching. For this reason, stress is laid not only on the intellectual-reflective aspects, including research, but also on the technical-practical level (writing exercises in style and shorter compositions, playing scores, improvisation) and on oral and written communication and presentation.
- comprehensive knowledge of different historical and contemporary compositional techniques and important works from all periods;
- Ability to create stylistic exercises in sophisticated compositional styles, instrumentations and also detailed analyses of difficult and complex works;
- experience in composition;
- The ability to present music-theoretical problems at the piano;
- The ability to absorb music theory at a high level, formulate it in words and to teach it to amateurs as well as to professional students.

Contents of studies and curriculum
The contents of studies for the MA MP Music Theory are organized in five different categories. The most extensive category, the core subjects, comprises 56 CP; the subjects included in the theoretical category are naturally closely connected to the Major subject. The subjects in the pedagogical category comprise 21 CP; the contextual subjects (8 CP) are all obligatory electives, all remaining areas are mandatory. This Major may be combined with a Minor in Composition. Due to the numerous synergies, only a few extra CPs are necessary.
Core subjects The main focus in this program of study is on the individual instruction in the Major subject, which – following a well-established tradition in Basel– is taught by two different instructors. It encompasses not only practical work on exercises in counterpoint and style, but also the analysis of music of various eras, the study of literature on harmony and compositional writing techniques, as well as the beginnings of the students’ own research. Students gain compositional experience in their individual composition lessons; The Colloquium Composition/Music Theory provides a forum for instructors and students to present their current work. The music-theoretical part of the Masters project accommodates the reflective-communicative and the practical aspects equally: with a public lecture on a topic evolved from the study of music theory or its instruction; with a substantial written paper, which can be of analytical or academic nature; and in the end with a portfolio comprising the work produced during the term of studies.
Theory Among the subjects in the Theory section, analysis, having begun in the BA Music Theory, is continued throughout the studies. Also, the students study notation, in theory as well as in practice in instrumentation classes. An insight into electronic organology is obligatory as well. Independent study of repertoire (actual works and literature) is expected and is credited accordingly.
Practice Since piano-playing is of vital importance for teaching music theory, both artistic piano instruction and also score-reading are promoted; anyone who hasn’t yet completed their ear-training requirements has the opportunity to do so at this point. Importance is attached to improvisation, which is offered in free or stylistically bound forms – especially noteworthy are the courses offered by the Jazz department and the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.
Context The group of contextual subjects, as obligatory electives, provides a framework with regard to content, in which students choose further courses according to their own points of emphasis; for instance an in-depth look at the manifold possibilities in electronics, or courses in the field of communication. It is expressly desired that events at the “Musikwissenschaftlichen Institut” are taken into account; anyone who has not yet completed music history requirements has the opportunity to do so at this point.
Pedagogy This is where the specific preparations for a future teaching career are made, through courses in general didactics and pedagogical psychology, practice teaching and especially in didactics/methods for music theory, where the students can reflect upon and practice teaching music-theoretical material to students at all levels; the reflexion on teaching culminates in written papers which are required for the pedagogical portion of the MA project.

Presentation of the students’ creative work
Students in the Composition and Music Theory program are offered various forums in which they can present their work; the most important being the Colloquium Composition/Music Theory, which, in association with the “Interpretationsforum” and the colloquium 48 – which are both organized by the Department of Research and Development – offers a podium for the presentation of students’ current work. Also, the presentations included in the MA projects are not only exams, but also public events in which the students can present their work.
