Master of Arts in Specialized Musical Performance

Composition

Director: Prof. Elke Hofmann (ad int.)

Duration of studies: normally two years
Extent: 120 CPs (credit points)

In order to achieve the highest level of accomplishment in Composition, a long period of technical study is required, necessitating a third cycle added on to the end of the BA-MA-System. For this reason, the Master in Specialized Musical Performance (MA SP) is offered for both Majors in Composition and in Music Theory, providing a structure which allows for a specialization analogous to a PhD or DMA.  The MA SP is intended exclusively for students with the potential to lay claims to a position in an international context. On the basis of technical and reflective competencies appropriate to a professional degree in Composition, these students develop themselves into artistic and compositional personalities who can perform their creative activities at the highest level, able to reflect and further develop themselves independently through adequate classification in a cultural context. This includes an extensive catalogue of works as well as the greatest professionalism in association with all the artistic and administrative realities of the profession.

Aims of the study programs

  • independent compositional and artistic personality aimed toward a position in an international context;
  • substantial catalogue of works;
  • the ability to independently analyse different current compositional techniques and utilize them in the devopment of apersonal artistic musical language;
  • the distinct ability to reflect on one’s own actions and creative work on a high level (in oral and written form)  and to classify them into an artistic-scholarly and societal context;
  • Knowledge of the occupational field (collective rights, publishers, copyright and contract law, press) and the ability to communicative confidently with concert organizers, managers, orchestras, ensembles and music theaters.

Admission requirements

  • Bachelor of Arts  in Music; because of the high professional qualifications required, only especially talented students can be considered for the MA SP Music Theory directly after completing their Bachelor’s Degree. As a rule, students should complete an MA MP with a Major in Composition or a comparable degree before beginning.
  • Sufficient knowledge of German, at least “Stufe A2” („Gemeinsamer Europäischer Referenzrahmen“); you may be required to take a brief language test before you begin your studies.
  • Passed entrance exam, enough free places in the class

Entrance exam

At the entrance exam, you must prove the following skills:

  • outstanding fundamental training in Composition and/or Music Theory, according to the aims of the MA in Composition/Music Theory with Major Composition;
  • potential for development of an independent artistic personality, competent in analysis and reflection;
  • list of works and/or a list of theoretical and analytical papers and publications;

Contents of studies and curriculum

Due to the specialized nature of the MA SP Music Theory program, the main portion of the CPs is comprised of core subjects (85 CPs); the obligatory elective subjects “context” comprise 20 CP, leaving 15 CPs for free electives to be chosen by the student. There are no provisions for Minors.

Core subjects
The individual instruction in the Major subject – by request with two different instructors – deals mainly with the individual advancement of music-theoretical thought and action; the students are expected to actively contribute to a great extent in the planning and organization of the Colloquium Composition/Music Theory.
The MA projects correspond to those of the MA KMth Composition, however, the written portions are more extensive and the standards are higher.

Context
Individual further study is provided for through elective subjects which include all the possibilities that Basel has to offer in musical education.

Presentation of the students’ creative work

Students in the Composition and Music Theory program are offered various forums in which they can present their work; the most important being the Colloquium Composition/Music Theory, which, in association with the “Interpretationsforum” and the colloquium 48 – which are both organized by the Department of Research and Development – offers a podium for the presentation of students’ current work. Also, the presentations included in the MA projects are not only exams, but also public events in which the students can present their work.
Students in the Composition classes originated the (at least) annual concert series  „AKUT“, organized exclusively by the students themselves, which is integrated in the weekly student recitals. The Composition students with main focus on the Electronic Studio as well as the students in MA KMth Audio Design present their work inter alia in the series „Nachtstrom“ in the Gare du Nord Basel. The annual  end of season “Schlusskonzerte” are aimed at the general public. One of these is presented by the Ensemble Phoenix and is reserved  for works by Composition students. Lastly, the presentations included in the MA projects are not only exams, but also public events in which the students can present their work.
