Master of Arts (MA) in Specialized Music Performance

Music Theory

Director: Prof. Elke Hofmann (ad int.)
Duration of studies: normally two years
Extent: 120 CPs

The Master of Arts in Specialized Musical Performance program (MA SP) provides a structure for both Majors in Composition and in Music Theory, which allows for a specialization analogous to a PHD or DMA.  For music theorists who are interested in research and/or have the aptitude for teaching at a Conservatory (Hochschule) at Major level, specialization at the highest level is essential, and in some countries even a requirement for appointment to a professorship.  The MA SP Music Theory offers selected music theorists the opportunity to specialize themselves at the highest level, and to secure an independent position in current music theory, based on the technical, reflective and pedagogical skills which are equivalent to a professional qualification in music theory.

Aims of the study programs

  • The ability to absorb music theory at the highest level, to express it in written or oral form, and teach it, e.g. at a  Conservatory (Hochschule) at Major level;
  • highly specialized theoretical knowledge of music of different styles and eras and a competent mastery of their compositional techniques;
  • additional knowledge in the fields of historic and systematic musicology.

Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor of Arts in Music; because of the high professional qualifications required, only especially talented students can be considered for the MA SP Music Theory directly after completing their Bachelor’s Degree. As a rule, students should complete an MA MP with a Major in Music Theory or a comparable degree before beginning.
  • Sufficient knowledge of German, at least “Stufe B1” („Gemeinsamer Europäischer Referenzrahmen“); you may be required to take a brief language test before you begin your studies.
  • Passed entrance exam, enough free places in the class

Entrance exam

At the entrance exam, you must prove the following skills:

  • outstanding fundamental training in Composition and/or Music Theory (according to the aims of the study program Master of Arts in Music Education Major Music Theory);
  • potential for development of an independent artistic personality, competent in analysis and reflection;
  • list of works and/or a list of theoretical and analytical papers and publications;
  • special aptitude for interdisciplinary work (literature, philosophy, historic-sociological environment);
  • special aptitude for academic and artistic research-oriented work.

Detailed information on the entrance exam (description of procedure, sample questions, registration form) can be found under  Administratives>MA in Specialized Musical Performance.

Contents of studies and curriculum

Due to the specialized nature of the MA SP Music Theory program, the main portion of the CPs is comprised of core subjects (87 CPs); the obligatory elective subjects “context” comprise 22 CP, leaving 11 CPs for free electives to be chosen by the student. There are no provisions for Minors.

Core subjects
Because of the high degree of specialization in these programs of study, the individual instruction in the Major subject – by request with two different instructors – deals mainly with the individual advancement of music-theoretical thought and action; the students are expected to actively contribute to a great extent in the planning and organization of the Colloquium Composition/Music Theory.

Context
As in the context subjects in the MA MP MTh and MA KMth Composition programs, individual further study is provided for through elective subjects which include all the possibilities that Basel has to offer in musical education.

Major instructors in Music Theory:

Prof. Balz Trümpy
Prof. Dr. Jakob Ullmann
Prof. Qiming Yuan
