«Fantasy cannot be realised without experiment. The contradiction in this statement does not exist. If one experiments, one discovers that fantasy is ignited. Conversely, if one has an imaginative idea, one needs the experiment in order to test out if it is realisable. That is intuitively linked. Something occurs to someone, one hears something, sees something and must test it. One searches for material, searches for people, tries out, and then comes the experiment. The reverse is also true: if one experiments, one gets the most remarkable ideas that one otherwise would never have had, because this situation ignites fantasy.» Karlheinz Stockhausen, documented in a musicological seminar, Freiburg/Br., 1985
Master of Arts in Specialized Music Performance Contemporary Music
Enrollment 2011-12 Application deadline: February 15, 2011 Entrance exams: April 11/12 2011

Course goal
The goal of this Masters course is to specialise in contemporary music by engaging with it in an immersive way. A practical and theoretical grounding is developed alongside the central aspects of the course: chamber music and ensemble for new music. The programme’s core constitutes the STUDIO for contemporary music. In this studio, groups of Masters students work as a class with their tutors and/or guests in workshops, performance classes, seminars, Master classes and colloquia. Each student is assigned a tutor responsible for their personal development from the team directing the pro - gramme: Jürg Henneberger, Mike Svoboda or Marcus Weiss. This is instrumental as an advisory role in organising the Masters programme and supervising the end of year written project. The programme can be supplemented either by theoretical courses offered by the Hochschule or by external practical experiences. The two-year long programme will be examined by a Masters concert/project and a performance-focussed written project.
